UPDATE: ZDF Studios has just secured international distribution rights for Season 4 of the groundbreaking series “Ancient Superstructures,” which prominently features the iconic Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. This new season, currently in production, is set to culminate in June 2024, marking a historic milestone as the final stone is placed on the basilica’s main structure.

The much-anticipated season is a collaboration between Pernel Media and several partners, including RMC Découverte, Histoire, and SBS. With rights secured across most global markets—excluding French-speaking territories and Australia—this season promises an exclusive glimpse into one of Europe’s most ambitious architectural projects, which has been in the making for an astonishing 144 years.

As the Sagrada Familia reaches a significant milestone coinciding with the centenary of architect Antoni Gaudí‘s death, the show will capture the momentous event of the final stone placement. Topping out at 172.5 meters (565.9 feet), this basilica is set to become the tallest church in the world, further solidifying its place in architectural history.

“Ancient Superstructures” is known for its innovative blend of high-end CGI and scientific exploration, employing a multi-scale approach that ranges from satellite imagery to microscopic analysis. This season will not only focus on the Sagrada Familia but also explores other historical landmarks, including Greece’s Acropolis of Athens, Germany’s Neuschwanstein Castle, and France’s Pierrefonds Castle.

The completion of the main structure is slated for 2026, while additional decorative work on the Glory Facade is expected to continue until 2034. This timeline offers viewers a front-row seat to one of the most ambitious long-term builds in Europe, making it a must-watch for history enthusiasts and casual viewers alike.

“This franchise has consistently set the gold standard for factual programming,” said Nikolas Huelbusch, director of unscripted at ZDF Studios. “Capturing the historic completion of the Sagrada Familia is a testament to the series’ relevance.”

Pernel Media’s Fabrice Frank emphasized the show’s mission: “Our goal has always been to reveal the ‘invisible’ secrets of these marvels through cutting-edge technology. With Season 4, we are taking this to a new level.”

The deal reinforces ZDF Studios’ role as a key global distributor and co-production partner, while Pernel Media continues to expand its international programming slate. With the release of this season, audiences can expect a fresh perspective on some of the world’s most iconic monuments, presented in a compelling and visually stunning format.
