UPDATE: The city of Yukon, Oklahoma, has officially announced that plans for the highly anticipated multi-million dollar Sunset Amphitheater will not move forward. This decision, revealed by Mayor Brian Pillmore during a city council meeting on October 24, 2023, comes amid significant concerns about the project’s economic feasibility and community impact.
The proposed amphitheater was set to accommodate 12,500 attendees and was expected to generate billions in economic benefits over the first decade. Mayor Pillmore emphasized that the city had conducted a thorough review process, including a costly $60,000 economic feasibility study from a Chicago-based consulting firm, which played a crucial role in the decision-making.
“We’re not supporting moving forward with this project,” Pillmore stated in an interview. The study indicated that Yukon could stand to lose over $91 million in sales tax revenue to Oklahoma City due to a tax-sharing agreement with Venu Group, which would have acquired 25 acres of land for less than $500,000. The city’s share of ticket fees would have only provided limited financial return, raising doubts about the project’s long-term viability.
The mayor expressed that while the study showed some potential return, it was not sufficient to justify continued investment. “I think our community should be very satisfied that we have a council that listens to them,” Pillmore added, underscoring the importance of prioritizing the city’s best interests.
However, Pillmore reassured residents that this decision does not signal a halt to all development in Yukon. “Yukon is open for business,” he affirmed, indicating that future projects will be carefully considered to ensure they align with the community’s needs and offer a suitable return on investment.
As this project is now deemed “closed at this point,” the city will explore other opportunities for the land, emphasizing the importance of finding the right fit for Yukon. The mayor’s collaborative discussions with Venu Group throughout the planning process were noted, highlighting ongoing communication and partnership potential for future city projects.
This development marks a significant shift for Yukon’s growth strategy and has left many residents reflecting on the implications for local economic opportunities and community engagement. As the city moves forward, residents will be keenly watching for new proposals that align with their vision for Yukon’s future.
