UPDATE: A group of about a dozen students in Hollister are diving into the exciting world of robotics this week, participating in a 90-minute daily course focused on building and programming Lego robots. The program, organized by San Benito Robotics at the Montessori School, runs through July 2023 and is designed for children in grades three through eight.

These young innovators are guided by experienced mentors, including Giovanny Arenas and Fisk Ehn, both alumni of the San Benito High School Robotics Team. Arenas, a founding member of the team, emphasized the course’s goal: to ignite a passion for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) among participants.

During the first part of the week, students have been busy constructing their robots and programming them using “code blocks” on iPads. This innovative approach allows them to navigate their creations through various challenges, including their initial task of driving into a designated square on the floor.

“This course makes learning more inviting, engaging, and fun,” said Arenas. “Once they grasp the fundamentals, the world is their oyster.” The excitement is palpable as the students gather Legos, build their robots, and prepare for a showcase event.

On Friday, students will demonstrate their skills to parents, competing in tasks that highlight what they have learned throughout the week. The atmosphere is buzzing with enthusiasm, with participants like 11-year-old Jude Nelson expressing joy in the process: “It’s a lot of fun,” he said while absorbed in his robot creation.

As the week progresses, the focus remains on empowering these young minds with essential skills that could shape their futures. The hands-on experience with robotics not only enhances their technical abilities but also fosters teamwork and creativity.

Stay tuned for updates from this inspiring program as students gear up for their final showcase!
