Woodland Community College (WCC) has achieved significant recognition by being named one of the Top 200 community colleges in the United States by the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program. This designation opens the door for WCC to compete for the $1 million Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence, a prestigious accolade that acknowledges high performance and student success among two-year colleges.

The Aspen Prize honors institutions that demonstrate exceptional student outcomes. The selection of these 200 colleges was based on a thorough analysis of key metrics, including student retention, completion rates, transfer rates, and the attainment of bachelor’s degrees. This recognition places Woodland Community College in an esteemed group of educational institutions committed to fostering student-centered success and equitable outcomes.

Commitment to Student Success

“Being named among the Aspen Top 200 is an incredible honor,” stated Dr. Lizette Navarette, President of Woodland Community College. “The Aspen Prize is the major leagues! Most importantly, it reflects the commitment and passion for equitable student success demonstrated by our students, faculty, and staff.” Dr. Navarette emphasized that WCC’s mission revolves around transforming lives and strengthening communities through education.

Initiated in 2010, the Aspen Prize aims to identify and celebrate community colleges that excel in delivering exceptional outcomes and show continuous improvement. Over the next 20 months, eligible colleges will undergo a rigorous review process, which will culminate in the announcement of the Aspen Prize winner in spring 2027. Josh Wyner, Executive Director of the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program, highlighted that the prize rewards colleges that achieve meaningful outcomes for students, ultimately leading to lifelong success.

Recent Honors and Initiatives

In addition to the Aspen recognition, Woodland Community College has recently been awarded the title of Pathway Champion, receiving the “Excellence in Placement” Award for its Campuswide Growth in Transfer-level English Success. This accolade underscores WCC’s dedication to equitable access and student achievement, ranking it among the top three California community colleges for growth in completing transfer-level English courses from the 2022–23 to 2023–24 academic year.

Earlier this year, WalletHub ranked Woodland Community College as the best college in California and the fourth-best in the United States. This assessment was based on various metrics, with tuition rates being a primary focus. According to WalletHub, attending a community college before transferring to a public four-year university can significantly reduce educational costs for students.

The college has made substantial investments in facilities, including a multi-million dollar performing arts and culinary center. WCC also features a student and staff “Marketplace,” a food closet, and a Student Wellness Center, enhancing support for its community. Collaborations with the Yolo Food Bank further demonstrate WCC’s commitment to serving its students.

Recognizing the needs of adult learners, the Woodland City Council approved an agreement to fund the “Reconnect @ Woodland Community College” program, part of the wider Woodland Promise Program. This initiative offers scholarships of up to $300 to help students in financial need. Specifically targeting adults aged 26 and older who have some college experience but no degree, the program aims to encourage local residents to return to education with tailored support.

Woodland Community College’s recent accolades and initiatives highlight its ongoing commitment to academic excellence, student equity, and creating pathways for socioeconomic mobility. With a focus on transformative education, WCC continues to pave the way for its students and the broader community.
