URGENT NEWS: As winter weather sets in, experts urge everyone to stay active despite the cold. New guidance from Family and Consumer Sciences specialist Sharolyn Jackson highlights the importance of maintaining physical fitness during these chilly months. She emphasizes that adults should aim for 150 minutes per week of moderate activity, which translates to about 30 minutes five days a week.

According to Jackson, even a brisk 10- to 15-minute walk outdoors can contribute significantly to meeting this goal. To ensure safety and comfort, she recommends dressing in layers, including a warm hat and gloves, along with appropriate footwear and a weather-resistant coat.

Winter activities can be fun for all ages. Jackson notes that children thrive in snowy conditions, and adults can join in the excitement for a healthy dose of exercise. Simple chores like raking leaves or shoveling snow also provide excellent opportunities to stay fit—just remember not to overexert yourself!

For those preferring indoor exercises, Jackson suggests several effective strategies. “Focus on strength, flexibility, and balance,” she advises. Exercises can range from bodyweight routines to using household items for resistance. For example, you can do arm curls with cans of vegetables while watching television or utilize resistance bands for added strength training.

Even small movements, like hopping around the house, can help boost bone strength. Jackson encourages creativity in finding ways to stay active, stating, “When brushing your teeth or washing dishes, stand on one foot to build balance and strength.”

Moreover, the Cottonwood Extension District will launch programs like Stay Strong Stay Healthy and Walk With Ease in early 2026. These initiatives are designed to further support community members in achieving their fitness goals during the winter months.

Michelle Beran, the 4-H and Youth Development Agent for the Cottonwood District, emphasizes the significance of these activities. “Keep learning. Keep showing grace and kindness!” she encourages.
