UPDATE: A winter storm watch has been issued for parts of Northeast Pennsylvania as heavy snow is expected to impact travel this weekend. The National Weather Service confirmed the watch will be in effect from January 14, 2024, at 1 p.m. until January 15, 2024, at 7 p.m., affecting Northern Wayne County, Susquehanna County, and Wyoming County.

Residents should prepare for total snow accumulations between 5 and 10 inches and wind gusts reaching up to 35 mph. The weather service warns that roads, especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous, making travel extremely difficult. These conditions could severely disrupt both Monday morning and evening commutes.

The National Weather Service has urged the public to monitor the latest forecasts and delay all travel if possible. “If travel is absolutely necessary, drive with extreme caution and be prepared for sudden changes in visibility,” officials stated. They also emphasize maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles and allowing extra time for travel.

Winter weather poses significant dangers. Annually, over 6,000 weather-related vehicle fatalities and more than 480,000 injuries occur due to icy conditions. Drivers are advised to slow down and remain vigilant for icy patches, especially in temperatures near freezing.

Residents are reminded to prepare their vehicles for the storm. Essential winter supplies such as a windshield scraper, jumper cables, and extra warm clothing should be in place. It is crucial to inform family or friends of travel plans, including destination, route, and estimated arrival time.

In case drivers become stranded, they should remain calm, inform someone of their situation, and avoid walking to safety. Indicating distress by attaching a cloth to the car’s antenna can help rescuers locate them. Visibility can be enhanced by using the vehicle’s dome light and flashers.

As conditions worsen, watch out for snow plows and give them ample room to operate. Only pass when it is safe to do so. Before heading out, always check current road conditions to make informed decisions.
