The Williamsburg Symphony Orchestra (WSO) has appointed Alana Carithers as its new executive director, effective immediately. Carithers, who has been a prominent member of the WSO’s violin section since 2005, succeeds Carolyn Keurajian, who held the position for twelve years before departing for the Charlottesville Symphony Society.

Leadership Transition and Vision

The announcement, made on November 20, 2023, follows Carithers’ three-month tenure as interim executive director. Her selection reflects the WSO’s commitment to maintaining its core values of integrity, community, and collaboration. John Krapfl, chair of WSO’s board of trustees, expressed confidence in Carithers’ capabilities. “When you add her deep knowledge, extensive experience, passion for music, and her exceptional leadership and managerial skills, it becomes unmistakably clear that she is the right person for this role,” Krapfl stated.

Carithers brings over 20 years of experience in nonprofit and arts organizations across the United States. Her extensive background encompasses various roles, including artistic director, treasurer, and music librarian, showcasing her versatility and dedication to the arts community. “We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Alana, and we are confident that she will not only secure the future of our symphony but will help propel it to new heights as an even stronger cultural force in our community,” Krapfl added.

A Personal Journey in Music

In her new role, Carithers aims to enhance the WSO’s mission, which has played a significant part in her musical development. She holds a Master of Music degree in violin performance from Northwestern University. In a statement, Carithers expressed her gratitude: “I am deeply honored and profoundly grateful to accept this role with an organization that has been a meaningful part of my life. It is a true privilege to continue serving a mission and a community that I care about so deeply.”

Carithers is recognized not only as an accomplished violinist but also as an educator and arts leader. Her affiliations include orchestral and chamber music performances, international festivals, and solo appearances. The breadth of her experience is expected to be instrumental in guiding the WSO through its next chapter.

During Keurajian’s tenure, the WSO achieved significant milestones, including the appointment of conductor Michael Butterman in 2022. Her leadership, supported by the symphony staff, board members, and league volunteers, laid a strong foundation for the organization.

With Carithers at the helm, the WSO is poised to build on this legacy and continue enriching the cultural landscape of the Williamsburg community. Her appointment marks a new era for the symphony, one where her passion for music and commitment to the organization’s mission will guide future endeavors.
