West Virginia University (WVU) has bolstered its defensive lineup by adding linebacker Jason Hall, a transfer from Villanova. This commitment marks a significant development for the Mountaineers as they continue to address depth and experience on defense during the current recruitment cycle.

The Mountaineers initially concentrated on offensive recruits, but as the transfer portal began to close, head coach Rich Rodriguez and his staff shifted their focus to enhancing the defense. Hall’s signing is notable as he becomes the first linebacker among five defensive commitments made since Friday.

Hall began his collegiate career at Villanova in 2023, where he participated in four games but did not record any defensive statistics. His role expanded in 2024, as he played in 14 games, recording five tackles, one tackle for loss, and one forced fumble. Hall notably contributed with two tackles in the first round of the FCS Playoffs against Eastern Kentucky.

The 2025 season proved to be a breakout year for Hall. He again appeared in 14 games, amassing 40 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, and 3.5 sacks. Over the last two seasons, he forced a total of two fumbles, showcasing his capability as a hard-hitting linebacker.

WVU’s need for experienced linebackers became pressing after losing key players Reid Carrico and Chase Wilson, who both exhausted their eligibility. While the Mountaineers have some younger players in their pipeline, several have transferred out, necessitating urgent recruitment efforts. Although true freshmen are expected to arrive in 2026, they are not anticipated to start immediately.

The Mountaineers have now brought in four linebackers, each possessing valuable experience, which is crucial for strengthening the defense. Although the influx of transfer signings has slowed, WVU is expected to secure one or two more players, with reports indicating that a few prospects are currently visiting Morgantown.

With Hall’s addition, the Mountaineers have now welcomed a total of 32 transfers during this recruitment cycle. Coupled with high school recruits, WVU is poised to introduce over 70 new players for the upcoming 2026 season. Rodriguez humorously noted the challenge of learning names with such a large influx of new talent, suggesting he may face a similar struggle in the forthcoming season.

As the Mountaineers prepare for the next chapter, Hall’s commitment is a promising step towards rebuilding a competitive defense.
