Water.org has reached a significant milestone, providing access to safe water or sanitation for over 81 million individuals globally. This achievement underscores the effectiveness of Water.org’s market-driven solutions, which empower those living in poverty to make informed choices about their water and sanitation needs.
In the past year alone, more than 10 million people have gained sustainable access to these essential services. Gary White, CEO and co-founder of Water.org, emphasized the importance of this progress: “These are families choosing the household solutions that work best for them.” The organization has facilitated 17.8 million small loans through local financial partners, enabling families to choose solutions that suit their circumstances.
Addressing a Global Crisis
Currently, 2.2 billion people lack access to safe water, while 3.5 billion do not have access to safe sanitation facilities. Water.org tackles this crisis by utilizing innovative, market-driven approaches. For every dollar donated, the organization unlocks $20 for water and sanitation solutions for families in need. Notably, 90% of these affordable loans are extended to women, who are disproportionately impacted by the water crisis. This focus on women not only aids those most affected but also fosters community resilience and empowerment.
Vedika Bhandarkar, President and COO of Water.org, stated, “Our work focuses on ensuring that families in need can take control of their futures.” By partnering with local financial institutions, Water.org helps families select water and sanitation solutions that are both accessible and sustainable, reinforcing long-term stability.
Transforming Lives Through Access
Water.org’s methodology has proven effective, impacting more than 81 million lives—more than double the reach of any other leading water charity. By making financing accessible, the organization enables countless families to overcome obstacles to essential resources. This effort results in improved health outcomes for children, increased educational opportunities, and enhanced quality of life for women, who gain greater agency over their circumstances.
Co-founder Matt Damon remarked, “Access to safe water transforms lives—it improves health, gives kids the time and opportunity to go to school, empowers women with more choice, and helps families break the cycle of poverty.” He emphasized that investing in water solutions is crucial for advancing health, education, and gender equity globally.
Water.org remains committed to expanding its impact, aiming to change the lives of millions more families by providing lasting access to safe water and sanitation. To support their mission and help reach additional families, individuals can visit Water.org/donate.
