Warner Bros. Pictures has announced the revival of its iconic “Gremlins” franchise, confirming that a new film is in the works with a slated release date of November 19, 2027. The announcement was made by CEO David Zaslav during a third-quarter earnings call, marking a significant moment for fans of the series.
Returning to the project is renowned filmmaker Steven Spielberg, who will serve as executive producer through his company, Amblin Entertainment. Original writer Chris Columbus, known for his work on the first film, will take on the roles of both producer and director. The screenplay will be crafted by the duo of Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, who previously collaborated on “Final Destination: Bloodlines.”
The original “Gremlins,” released in 1984, was a unique blend of dark comedy and horror, achieving impressive box office success with a gross of $151 million against a budget of just $11 million. Its sequel, “Gremlins 2: The New Batch,” launched in 1990, leaned more towards comedy and satirized its predecessor, earning around $41 million at the box office, yet it garnered a loyal fan base over the years.
As anticipation builds for the new film, questions arise regarding its tone. The original’s mix of horror and humor set a high bar, and filmmakers will need to strike the right balance to satisfy both original fans and new audiences. Warner Bros. has been exploring interest in the franchise through the animated series “Secrets of the Mogwai,” which premiered in 2023.
The production team for this new installment includes Kristie Macosko Krieger, Holly Bario, Michael Barnathan, and Mark Radcliffe, all of whom bring extensive experience to the project. The combination of seasoned creators and a beloved franchise promises to ignite excitement as fans eagerly await November 19, 2027.
With the groundwork laid for a fresh take on a classic, “Gremlins 3” aims to recapture the magic that made the original films beloved while appealing to a new generation.
