URGENT UPDATE: The Big Backpack Build is set for August 12, 2024, and organizers are calling for volunteers to help pack 12,500 backpacks for students across Kent County. This initiative, led by the local nonprofit Storehouse of Community Resources, aims to ensure that thousands of children are equipped with essential school supplies for a successful academic year.
On Tuesday, August 12, volunteers will gather at DeVos Place from 9 a.m. to noon to assemble backpacks filled with notebooks, pencils, folders, books, and more. Organizers are seeking individuals aged 18 and older, families with older children, and company groups to participate in this impactful event. Participants are advised to wear comfortable clothing and should anticipate being on their feet for the duration of the packing session. Light snacks will be provided to keep volunteers energized.
In addition to packing, there are opportunities to help distribute backpacks during the SHOES 2025 program by In The Image, taking place at DeVos Place from August 13-15. Volunteers can sign up for morning, afternoon, and evening time slots to assist with this distribution, which pairs each backpack with a new pair of shoes for elementary students in need.
Kate Veldman, KSSN coordinator at Pinewood Middle School, emphasizes the importance of community involvement. “This event is crucial for setting our students up for success,” Veldman stated. “We’re grateful for every helping hand.”
Last year, the inaugural event brought together over 150 volunteers who successfully packed more than 10,000 backpacks. The remaining backpacks from this year’s event will be distributed throughout Kent County via the Kent School Services Network and their coordinators.
Those unable to volunteer can still contribute by donating online to help cover the costs of backpacks and supplies. Every contribution makes a difference in preparing students for the upcoming school year.
This event is not just about packing supplies; it’s about fostering community spirit and ensuring that every child has the tools they need to learn and thrive. Don’t miss this chance to make a difference—sign up today and help change lives in Kent County!
