URGENT UPDATE: The final Island of Misfit Toys toy drive in Vallejo is set for this Sunday, December 17, 2023, and organizer Mario Saucedo is sounding the alarm for last-minute donations. With only six bags of toys available, there are grave concerns about meeting the needs of over 200 children expected to attend.

The beloved toy drive, which began in 2003 with just 40 children receiving gifts, is now closing its doors due to a decline in donations and the increased competition from other drives in the area. “We are facing an urgent situation,” said Saucedo. “The community has always rallied behind us, but this year donations have been sparse.”

This year’s event will take place from noon to 5 p.m. at 831 Marin Street in Vallejo, and all donations can be dropped off at the Immersive Learning Center located at 250 Georgia Street. Saucedo expressed deep pride in the drive’s legacy, which has provided joy and support to countless families over two decades, particularly those affected by HIV.

In a heartfelt statement, Saucedo reflected on the impact of the drive, saying, “It’s been beautiful having so many people volunteer and donate. But it’s also heartbreaking that this will be our last year on a major scale.” He noted that financial strains, including recent tariffs increasing toy prices, have made it difficult to sustain the effort.

The toy drive was founded after bartender Donna Finney approached Saucedo, who pledged to create a festive atmosphere for families in need. Over the years, generous contributions from various organizations, including the Vallejo and Benicia fire departments and the Better Here Group, have made a significant difference.

Saucedo highlighted the late Greg Shoepp, former owner of Vallejo Holistic Health Center, as a major contributor, stating, “He was our angel,” donating nearly $20,000 worth of toys annually. With the drive now on its last legs, Saucedo plans to continue supporting families on a smaller scale.

As the event approaches, the community is urged to contribute whatever they can. “We need everyone’s help to make sure no child goes without a gift this holiday season,” Saucedo added.

This toy drive may have been labeled “misfit,” but it has perfectly fit the needs of Vallejo’s families for years. The clock is ticking, and the community has a chance to make a lasting impact before the curtain falls on this beloved tradition. Share this urgent call for donations and help ensure that every child experiences the joy of giving this holiday season.
