The US Navy has initiated a recovery operation for a crashed fighter jet and helicopter in the South China Sea. According to Commander Matthew Comer, a Public Affairs Officer for the US 7th Fleet, mobilization efforts began to verify the crash site and recover the F/A-18F Super Hornet and MH-60R Sea Hawk aircraft, which went down on October 26, 2023, during routine operations from the USS Nimitz (CVN 68).

The two aircraft crashed within a half-hour of each other while conducting maneuvers. Fortunately, all personnel involved were successfully rescued. As the investigation into the incidents continues, the Navy is taking steps to recover the wreckage.

Details of the Recovery Operation

Sources indicate that the recovery efforts will involve the Military Sealift Command’s USNS Salvor (T-ARS-52), a Safeguard-class rescue and salvage ship. The vessel was last tracked moving southwest in the South China Sea on the evening of November 9, having departed from Subic Bay near Manila, Philippines, with its final destination listed as Guam. Before commencing the salvage operation, the Salvor is expected to stop in Singapore to collect necessary equipment.

The MH-60R helicopter belonged to the “Battle Cats” of Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 73, while the F/A-18F was operated by the “Fighting Redcocks” of Strike Fighter Squadron 22. Both incidents are currently under investigation by the Navy, which aims to determine the circumstances surrounding the crashes.

Strategic Importance of the Region

The South China Sea is a strategic area that has seen increased military activity from various nations in recent years. The recovery of these aircraft not only highlights the operational capabilities of the US Navy but also underscores the ongoing tensions and interests in the region. The involvement of the US Navy in recovery operations serves to reinforce its commitment to maintaining a presence in critical international waters.

As the operation unfolds, further details will emerge regarding the recovery timeline and the findings of the ongoing investigations. The Navy’s efforts to retrieve the downed aircraft reflect its focus on safety and operational integrity in a complex geopolitical landscape.
