UPDATE: Tragedy struck the University of San Francisco as athletic director Larry Williams has died at the age of 62. He passed away Thursday morning while working out at War Memorial Gym located in the Sobrato Center on campus.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the cause of death. Williams had been at the helm of USF’s athletic department since July 2022, making significant contributions during his brief tenure. The university is in mourning as they navigate this unexpected loss.

“Our prayers go out to Larry’s wife, Laura, their children, Kristin, Sean, Scott, Eric, and Louis, their families, and his grandchildren,” wrote Salvador Aceves, university president, in a heartfelt letter to the USF community. “My thoughts and prayers also go to the university’s 250 student-athletes and all of the coaches and staff under Larry’s skillful watch.”

Larry Williams was not only recognized for his leadership at USF but also for his impressive athletic background. A two-time All-America selection at offensive line for Notre Dame, he went on to have a successful career in the NFL, starting 33 games for the Cleveland Browns between 1985 and 1992. Williams balanced his sports career with academics, earning a law degree while playing professionally.

Before joining USF, Williams served as athletic director at the University of Portland from 2004 to 2011 and held positions at Marquette and Akron. In light of this sudden loss, Stephanie Shrieve-Hawkins, USF’s deputy athletic director, has been appointed as the interim athletic director as the university begins to navigate this challenging time.

The university community is urged to come together in support of each other, especially during this difficult period. As more details emerge about Larry Williams’ passing, the focus remains on honoring his legacy and the impact he had on USF athletics.
