BREAKING: A tragic shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in British Columbia has left six people dead, including the shooter, identified as 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar. The incident unfolded on February 11, 2024, starting with the fatal shooting of his mother, 39-year-old Jannifer Strang, and his 11-year-old step-brother at their home before he proceeded to the school, where he opened fire on innocent students and staff.

According to Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald, Van Rootselaar, a biological male who identified as female, began transitioning six years ago. The motives behind the shooting remain unclear, with investigations still underway. The shooting began at approximately 1:20 p.m. MST, triggering a swift police response and a public alert that was lifted at 5:45 p.m. MST.

At the school, Van Rootselaar killed a 39-year-old female teacher and three 12-year-old female students, as well as two male students aged 11 and 12. In addition, he wounded 25 others, two of whom were airlifted to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. The RCMP confirmed that Van Rootselaar took his own life with what is believed to be a self-inflicted wound.

Investigators recovered a long gun and a modified pistol from the scene. McDonald noted that Van Rootselaar had previously attended Tumbler Ridge Secondary School but dropped out four years ago. Authorities reported no evidence of bullying related to his transgender status. However, the police had responded to multiple calls to his family home regarding mental health issues involving firearms.
