UPDATE: On January 29, 2023, a record number of residents in Selma, Alabama, took advantage of free glaucoma screenings, highlighting the urgent need for eye health awareness. The Visually Impaired People Organization, Inc. (V.I.P.) collaborated with Selma Primary Eye Care to commemorate Glaucoma Awareness Month with this vital health initiative.
During the event, Dr. Kristina Lovinggood conducted eye pressure tests for 20-25 individuals, marking it as the most successful turnout since the screenings began in 2015. William Bowman, CEO and President of V.I.P., expressed his satisfaction with the outcomes, stating, “I’m just glad that people took time out of their day to get an eye screening.” Alarmingly, 10-15 attendees were advised to schedule follow-up appointments due to elevated eye pressure, a critical warning sign for glaucoma.
The procedure, known as tonometry, measures fluid pressure inside the eye. Early detection is crucial, as Bowman emphasized, “Once you have a serious visual impairment, your life drastically changes.” He aims to raise awareness about how early screenings can prevent progression of not only glaucoma but also other serious health issues such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and various cancers.
Local officials, including Selma Mayor Johnny Moss III and Dallas County Probate Judge Jimmy Nunn, attended the event, each presenting proclamations to officially declare January as Glaucoma Awareness Month in their respective jurisdictions. Their support underscores the community’s commitment to health education and preventive care.
Bowman urges anyone who missed the event to take action: “Even if you weren’t able to make it to this event, still give Dr. Lovinggood a call to get scheduled for a screening.” Residents can visit Primary Eye Care at 2401 Medical Center Parkway, Selma, to arrange appointments.
This initiative not only highlights the importance of regular eye examinations but also serves as a reminder that proactive health measures can significantly alter life outcomes. As V.I.P. continues its mission, the hope is to inspire even more community members to prioritize their eye health.
