The situation escalated recently as large quantities of spoiled fruits and vegetables have been dumped onto sidewalks, attracting rats, roaches, and flies. The stench has become unbearable for nearby residents, with some seen rummaging through the decaying produce for anything salvageable. “It’s basically most of the people who stay around here that don’t want to pay for trash cans,” said local business owner Victor Pena.
Despite complaints made to local officials, little progress has been made to resolve the issue. District 14 Councilmember Ysabel Jurado acknowledged the problem, stating, “Our office is aware of the ongoing dumping and has been working closely with LASAN on clean-ups.” However, Pena insists that these efforts are insufficient. “The rotten food just piles back up again the next week,” he added.
Mayor Karen Bass’s office confirmed that “many tons of illegally dumped food waste are being removed by LA Sanitation.” They convened city departments earlier today to develop a comprehensive strategy to address the crisis, including increasing LAPD patrols in the area. “These are not victimless crimes as they create unsanitary conditions and blight,” the statement emphasized, urging residents to report illegal dumping to 311.
