UPDATE: August marks National Breastfeeding Month, a critical time to recognize and support the essential practice of breastfeeding. This year’s theme, “Forward Together,” emphasizes the urgent need for community and policy support to ensure every family can access the benefits of breastfeeding.
Just announced by the U.S. Breastfeeding Committee, the month-long initiative aims to highlight the profound health advantages for both infants and mothers. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, breastfeeding not only provides optimal nutrition but also significantly boosts babies’ immune systems and fosters a strong attachment between mother and child.
With startling statistics, breastfeeding reduces the risk of chronic illnesses. Research published in The Lancet reveals that for every 12 months a woman breastfeeds, her risk of developing breast cancer drops by an impressive 4.3%. Yet, many families face significant obstacles—such as inadequate parental leave and workplace support—that hinder their ability to breastfeed successfully.
Authorities stress that it’s time for action. Healthcare providers, employers, and policymakers are urged to create environments that normalize and encourage breastfeeding. This is not just a health issue; it’s a matter of community support and family well-being.
In Hays and Ellis County, a local celebration will take place on August 6, 2023, at 4 p.m. during a Chamber Catch Up at the Hays Public Library. Join the Cottonwood Extension District to celebrate this vital initiative, learn about local breastfeeding support, and connect with others in the community. Refreshments will be served.
What can YOU do to help? Support local breastfeeding-friendly policies and businesses, advocate for paid family leave, and share valuable resources with new parents. Organizations like La Leche League and local breastfeeding coalitions are excellent places to start.
Breastfeeding is a deeply personal journey, yet it should never be faced alone. This National Breastfeeding Month, let’s unite to ensure every family receives the support they need from the first latch to the last. Spread the word, celebrate the mothers in your life, and help promote and protect breastfeeding as a fundamental right.
