UPDATE: Volunteers are urgently needed this Saturday, February 28, 2024, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Shoal Creek Park in Montevallo, Alabama for a crucial “Privet Pull” event aimed at protecting the park’s native ecosystem. The Shoal Creek Park Foundation has mobilized community members to combat the invasive Chinese privet that threatens local flora and fauna.

The event is set to take place at 2781 Highway 119, with organizers emphasizing the urgent need to remove these harmful non-native plants that crowd out native species. Chinese privet, first introduced to the U.S. in the 19th century, has become a significant ecological threat, outcompeting native plants and providing little benefit to wildlife. Its toxic berries and low-nutrition nectar contribute to malnourishment in birds and mammals.

The “Privet Pull” is not just an environmental effort; it is a community gathering where residents can make a tangible difference. Organizers state, “We need a lot of people to come out and make quick work of this damaging plant. A few hours of time will help improve Shoal Creek Park for everyone—humans, plants, and animals alike.”

Volunteers are encouraged to wear sturdy boots and bring gloves, along with any personal weeding tools they prefer. However, tools and water will be provided, and lunch will be served after the hard work concludes. Support from organizations such as Jefferson County Greenways and the Magic City Toolbank ensures that all necessary equipment will be on hand.

Since its establishment in 2017, the Shoal Creek Park Foundation has worked tirelessly to enhance the park, which was willed to the city by Montevallo native Betty Lawler. The foundation has focused on improving accessibility, funding archaeological explorations, and promoting beautification projects, making the park a vital recreational and historic destination.

This volunteer day is supported by multiple organizations, including Rural Bridge Community Works, the Alabama Audubon Society, and the Alabama Cooperative Extension. This collaborative effort underscores the importance of community involvement in preserving natural spaces for future generations.

Join your neighbors and make an impact this weekend! Every hour of volunteer work counts towards the health of Shoal Creek Park, ensuring it remains a vibrant space for all. Additional details will be provided as the event approaches, but the call for action is clear—your help is needed NOW!
