UPDATE: A catastrophic explosion at Accurate Energetic Systems in central Tennessee has left 18 people missing and a community in shock. The blast occurred around 7:45 a.m. local time on Friday, leveling a building at the explosives plant and sending debris flying for half a square mile.

Witnesses described the terrifying moment as a thunderous roar shook homes miles away. “I thought the house had collapsed with me inside of it,” said local resident Gentry Stover, who lives near the plant. The explosion was felt as far as 15 miles away, with people in neighboring towns believing they experienced an earthquake or a meteor strike.

Authorities have confirmed fatalities but have not disclosed the number, emphasizing the chaotic scene that persisted long after the explosion. “We need our communities to come together and understand that we’ve lost a lot of people,” said Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis, whose own childhood friend was among the victims.

Over 300 emergency personnel are currently on-site, with search efforts ongoing. The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is sending a response team, expected to arrive Saturday, to assist in the investigation alongside local law enforcement and the FBI.

The explosion triggered a series of smaller blasts, complicating rescue efforts. Residents are being urged to avoid the area as emergency teams work tirelessly to manage the aftermath. “Prayers are needed… our hearts are broken for the families and for the loved ones that lost their lives,” said Wendall Stinson, CEO of Accurate Energetic Systems.

As investigators work to determine the cause, they are utilizing cell phone records to identify who was present at the time of the blast. Sheriff Davis noted that the community is in a “gauntlet of emotions,” as families await updates on their loved ones.

Accurate Energetic Systems, known for producing military and industrial explosives, employs around 80 people and is a significant part of the local economy. The facility, located about 60 miles west of Nashville, has a history of safety violations, with previous incidents raising concerns about workplace safety practices.

The local community gathered for a vigil on Friday evening, lighting candles and holding hands in solidarity for those affected. “This is going to have a devastating impact on quite a few families,” said Tennessee State Senator Kerry Roberts, highlighting the company’s deep roots in the community.

As the investigation unfolds, authorities are working to contact the families of those unaccounted for, with the potential for more updates expected throughout the weekend. The situation remains fluid, and officials continue to urge residents to stay clear of the area while emergency services conduct their work.

This devastating incident is a stark reminder of the risks associated with industrial operations, as communities come together to support one another in this time of tragedy. Further updates will follow as information becomes available.
