PASADENA — DeShaun Foster, the head coach of the UCLA Bruins, is grappling with a challenging start to the season, as the team sits at an alarming 0-3 following a crushing defeat to New Mexico on September 29, 2023. The loss, which saw the Bruins fall 35-10, marks one of the worst beginnings in the program’s history. After taking over from Chip Kelly in 2024, Foster’s overall record now stands at 5-10.

During a post-game press conference at the Rose Bowl, Foster reflected on the team’s struggles. He recalled more triumphant moments from his past, such as his four-touchdown performance against USC in 1998. However, the mood was markedly different as he faced a room filled with reporters, searching for answers amidst the team’s dismal start.

Foster noted that the Bruins had not begun a season with three consecutive losses since 2019, and with Big Ten play approaching, the outlook remains bleak. The losses to Utah and Mountain West opponents UNLV and New Mexico have raised questions about coaching strategies, player discipline, and overall team effort.

When asked about his message to the 31,163 fans present, many of whom were students on field trips, Foster emphasized loyalty, stating, “If you’re a real Bruin, you’ll still be a fan. There’s plenty of programs that have unfortunate starts and have been able to turn things around, so it’s either you stick with it or not.”

Despite Foster’s enthusiasm during his introductory press conference on February 13, 2024, when he expressed his desire to revitalize the Bruins’ football program, the energy in the stadium has noticeably waned. Athletic Director Martin Jarmond previously praised Foster for his “energy” and “hunger,” but those qualities seem to be challenged as the team seeks its first victory.

A direct question posed to Foster regarding his suitability for the head coach position prompted a confident affirmation: “Most definitely.” When asked why he felt that way, he replied, “Because I can get these boys to play.” Foster’s determination, however, faces a tough test as the Bruins strive to correct their course.

Redshirt senior defensive lineman Gary Smith III expressed unwavering support for Foster. “I believe in him 100%… I wouldn’t point the finger at Coach Fos. Coach Fos is a great guy,” he stated. Meanwhile, Nico Iamaleava, the redshirt sophomore quarterback, acknowledged the team’s shortcomings, stating, “We’re doing him a disservice not performing for him… It all falls back on the players.”

As the Bruins prepare for a bye week, the focus shifts to their next game against Northwestern, where they will seek to break their losing streak. Foster recognized the weight of responsibility that comes with his role. “Everything that happens can fall on me,” he said, underscoring the challenges ahead for both himself and the team.

The season’s early setbacks have tested the resolve of both Foster and his players. With the potential for improvement still alive, the Bruins hope to turn their fortunes around as they approach a crucial juncture in their season.
