Freshman Tzar Powell-Aparicio of Bridgewater State University has made a notable impact on the court, earning the title of MASCAC Rookie of the Week for his impressive performances. In just three games last week, the talented guard averaged 11 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and two steals, showcasing his all-around abilities.

Powell-Aparicio’s week included a challenging matchup against Wheaton College, where he contributed seven points, three rebounds, two assists, and two steals in a close 90-81 loss. He rebounded well during the BSU Cave Classic, helping the Bears achieve a split record. In a semifinal match against Regis, he scored 17 points along with four rebounds and four assists, although the Bears fell short 65-58. In the consolation match against Wentworth, Powell-Aparicio added nine points, three rebounds, and two steals, leading to a convincing victory with a score of 93-75.

Local Coaches and Athletes Recognized

In addition to Powell-Aparicio’s accolades, local high school coaches were celebrated by the Massachusetts Basketball Coaches Association. Four coaches received the esteemed Coaches of the Year honors across various divisions. Mark Dunham of Central Catholic was recognized in Division 1, while Steve Boudreau of Tewksbury earned accolades in Division 2. Anthony Faradie from Wilmington was honored in Division 3, and Rick Kilpatrick of Ayer Shirley received recognition in Division 4.

Meanwhile, the Commonwealth Athletic Conference cross country meet saw 28 local runners being named All-Stars for their outstanding performances. In the girls’ Lower Division, standout runners included Sarah Benchekroun from Innovation Academy, who finished first with a time of 22:02.6, followed closely by her teammates Kara Taylor and Annabel Cargill. Notable performances in the boys’ Lower Division were delivered by Oliver Scaffidi, who took first place with a time of 17:12.9.

UMass Lowell Lacrosse Season Ahead

Looking ahead, the UMass Lowell men’s lacrosse team is gearing up for an exciting 14-game schedule for the 2026 season. Head coach Drew Kelleher expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming season, highlighting the balance of experience and youth within the team. The season opener will take place at home against the Quinnipiac Bobcats on February 11, 2026, marking the third consecutive year the River Hawks will commence their season at home.

The team will then embark on their first road trip to face Mercyhurst on February 14, returning for two home games against Wagner and Holy Cross on February 21 and February 25, respectively. March will bring a series of away matches, beginning with a rivalry game against Massachusetts on March 3 and including a neutral site match against Queens of Charlotte on March 10.

The River Hawks will conclude their regular season focused on conference play, beginning with a matchup against UMBC on April 4. The final home game is scheduled for April 18, when they welcome the Vermont Catamounts to Cushing Field, before wrapping up the season at Bryant on April 25.
