UPDATE: Two National Guard members were shot in a shocking ambush just blocks from the White House on Wednesday afternoon. The victims, identified as Sarah Beckstrom, age 20, and Andrew Wolfe, age 24, are currently hospitalized in critical condition after the attack, which occurred around 2:15 p.m.

The incident took place less than 24 hours after Beckstrom and Wolfe were officially deputized to conduct presence patrols as part of their deployment for the D.C. Safe and Beautiful Mission, a program initiated to enhance security in the nation’s capital. Both are members of the West Virginia National Guard and had been stationed in Washington, D.C., since August, following orders from President Donald Trump to bolster law enforcement efforts.

According to Jeanine Pirro, the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, the attack was described as “targeted.” The suspected shooter, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, was also injured during the incident and is facing serious charges, including three counts of assault with intent to kill while armed. He is expected to be prosecuted for his actions in this violent encounter.

Wolfe, who entered service on February 5, 2019, is a staff sergeant in the U.S. Air Force and a specialist in the U.S. Army. Meanwhile, Beckstrom, who joined the National Guard on June 26, 2023, is assigned to the 863rd Military Police Company.

The emotional toll of this tragedy is profound. Beckstrom’s father, Gary Beckstrom, shared with The New York Times that his daughter may not survive her injuries, stating, “I’m holding her hand right now. It’s not going to be a recovery.” Meanwhile, Wolfe’s father, Jason Wolfe, expressed his anguish, simply asking for prayers for his son as he faces an uncertain future.

This violent episode raises urgent questions about safety and security for National Guard members deployed in high-risk environments. The joint task force investigating the shooting is expected to release more information as the situation develops.

Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity as investigations continue. The community is left to grapple with the implications of this attack, and the emotional burden weighs heavily on the families of the victims and the broader National Guard community.
