UPDATE: Two standout players from the Creston Panthers have just been recognized with prestigious all-district honors by the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association. Senior Parker Varner has been named a first-team pitcher, while sophomore Tom Mikkelsen secured a spot on the second team for the Class 3A Southwest District.

This announcement, made late last week, underscores the remarkable seasons both athletes had, making a significant impact on their team’s performance. Varner, boasting a stellar 6-2 record and a 2.18 earned run average, stood out on the mound. Over 61 innings, he achieved 72 strikeouts while allowing just 59 hits and only eight walks. Opponents managed a mere .248 batting average against him. When not pitching, Varner showcased his versatility by playing third base and shortstop, where he led the team with a remarkable .450 batting average and 25 RBIs.

Mikkelsen, primarily a catcher, demonstrated his versatility by also contributing in the outfield and as part of the starting pitching lineup. He finished the season with an impressive .363 batting average, hitting a team-high three home runs and driving in 17 RBIs. Mikkelsen’s pitching stats include a 2-4 record and a 2.07 ERA, with 27 strikeouts over 23.2 innings.

This exciting news comes as several other area players were also honored in the all-district selections, highlighting the competitive spirit of regional high school baseball. The accolades reflect not only individual achievements but also the dedication and teamwork that characterize the sport.

Details of the All-District Selections include notable names from other teams in the region. The first-team pitchers list features Hayden Mohwinkle from Carlisle, Evan Mott from Carlisle, and the aforementioned Varner. Catchers include Hayden Soma from Harlan and Noah Davies from Boone, while the first base position is claimed by Owen Myers from Perry.

As the baseball season transitions, all eyes are now on the upcoming postseason, where Varner and Mikkelsen will continue to shine. Fans and teammates are eager to see how their performances will influence the team’s success in critical games ahead.

This announcement not only celebrates these athletes’ achievements but also serves as a rallying point for the community, as local fans support their teams passionately. As the competition heats up, the excitement surrounding the Creston Panthers continues to grow.
