The Trump administration is planning to federalize 300 members of the Illinois National Guard, according to a statement from Governor JB Pritzker on March 30, 2024. Pritzker revealed that the Department of War issued an ultimatum, insisting he either call up the troops himself or allow the federal government to do so.

Pritzker remarked, “This morning, the Trump Administration’s Department of War gave me an ultimatum: call up your troops, or we will.” He expressed strong opposition to this directive, labeling it as “outrageous and un-American.” The governor noted that this order could pull hardworking individuals away from their jobs and families, describing the situation as a “manufactured performance” rather than a genuine effort to enhance public safety.

The move comes in the wake of clashes between federal agents and protesters at the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Broadview, Illinois, on March 29, 2024. According to the Cook County Sheriff’s Office, at least five individuals were arrested during these confrontations, facing charges such as resisting arrest and aggravated battery against a police officer.

Tensions escalated when Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Border Patrol Commander Greg Bovino were observed at the ICE facility, accompanied by several armed agents as well as a production crew. Later that evening, a line of Cook County sheriff’s officers, equipped with helmets and batons, prevented demonstrators from blocking the streets, marking a tense end to the day of protests.

Pritzker previously stated that the Department of Homeland Security had requested the deployment of 100 military personnel to Illinois to support ICE agents. The governor’s remarks reflect a broader concern regarding the role of military forces within state borders.

In response to the federal directive, Pritzker emphasized that state, county, and local law enforcement have been effectively coordinating to maintain public safety around the Broadview facility. He stated, “There is no need for military troops on the ground in the State of Illinois,” asserting his commitment to upholding the Constitution and protecting the rights of residents to express themselves peacefully.

As Pritzker continues to resist the federal government’s actions, he urges that the current situation is driven more by a desire for control than a legitimate concern for safety. He concluded his statement with a call to action, expressing his determination to protect the rights of Illinois residents amidst escalating tensions.

ABC7 has reached out to the Trump administration for comments regarding this situation, but no response was received at the time of publication.
