A tragic scooter collision in Bali has resulted in the death of an Australian man, while his partner fights for her life in hospital. The incident occurred on March 3, 2024, at approximately 04:30 local time, when Bryce Alexander Black and Samantha Baillie, both 33 years old and from New South Wales, were struck head-on by a vehicle in North Kuta.

Mr. Black, who was reportedly a father, succumbed to his injuries at the scene on Petitenget Street, according to the law firm Bali Legals. Ms. Baillie, a mother of two, was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition.

A GoFundMe campaign has been initiated by her friend, Savannah-Leigh Homer, who described the situation as the family enduring “the most devastating time” imaginable. Ms. Homer detailed the extensive injuries Ms. Baillie sustained, including a fractured skull with bleeding on the brain, multiple broken fingers, injuries to her pelvis, and severe damage to her feet.

“This was her first international trip, and she had just arrived in Bali the day before the accident,” Ms. Homer explained, emphasizing the tragedy of what was meant to be a celebratory milestone. She and Ms. Baillie’s mother have traveled to Bali to assist in managing the mounting hospital bills and arranging for her transport back to Australia.

The financial burden has been significant. “We have already paid $6,000 toward her initial hospital care, and we have now received a further medical bill of $52,000, with more costs expected,” Ms. Homer added. As of March 8, 2024, the fundraising effort had raised over $51,536, demonstrating the community’s support during this challenging time.

Social media has been inundated with tributes honoring Mr. Black’s memory. Comments from friends have expressed disbelief and sorrow, with one mourner stating, “I still can’t believe it’s happened to you.” Another shared, “Sending all the love in the world to Bryce and Sammy’s families.”

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has confirmed its involvement in assisting both families. A spokesperson stated, “We send our deepest condolences to the families at this difficult time,” highlighting the role of the department in providing consular support to Australians abroad.

As Ms. Baillie continues her fight for recovery, the community rallies around her family, hoping for a swift and positive outcome. The tragic loss of Mr. Black serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the unforeseen circumstances that can alter it in an instant.
