Totten Intermediate School achieved remarkable success during the fall season, clinching four championships in the Staten Island Middle School (SIMS) League. The school celebrated victories in both varsity and junior varsity categories for girls’ flag football and boys’ soccer, showcasing the dedication and talent of its student athletes.

Principal John Boyle expressed immense pride in his students, stating, “These Eagles truly soared both in the classroom and on the field! There is something very special about representing and competing for your school.” He also acknowledged the hard work of the coaching staff, noting that the athletes play passionately for their coaches and their institution.

Flag Football Triumphs

The Eagles’ junior varsity and varsity flag football teams, coached by Tommy DeAngelis and Gianna D’Acunto, both completed perfect seasons, finishing with 8-0 records. Their championship journey concluded with impressive back-to-back wins at Susan Wagner High School on November 6, 2023. The junior varsity team secured their second consecutive title, demonstrating a complete team effort throughout the season.

In the championship game, the junior varsity team defeated IS 7 with a score of 38-7. Demi Durante was named the game’s MVP, achieving three interceptions, including two pick-sixes. Quarterback Gianna Logosso threw four touchdown passes, with contributions from Frankie Ortiz, Tina Garcia, Mya Dobrova, and Addison Klein.

The varsity girls’ flag football team also shone brightly, marking an impressive four-peat in championships. Quarterback Ema Herbst delivered an MVP performance in the final, throwing three touchdown passes and adding a rushing touchdown in a thrilling 52-48 win over IS 75. Key players such as Alicia Albano, Gabby Gerardi, and Charlotte De Paola made significant contributions throughout the season.

Soccer Success

On the soccer field, the boys’ teams also made their mark under the guidance of coaches Gary Tames and Scott Griffin. The junior varsity Blue team finished the regular season with a 2-2-2 record but proved their potential in the championship, winning 3-2 against Marsh. Goals from Gian Cappelinni, a stunning long-range shot by Sebastian D’Orazio, and the decisive goal from Marc Norato secured the victory.

The varsity boys’ soccer team reached the pinnacle of their season on November 12, 2023, at Tottenville High School. After finishing the regular season with a 4-2 record, they entered the playoffs with determination. The championship match ended in a 0-0 draw, leading to a penalty shootout where the Eagles triumphed 5-4 against IS 72. Key penalty goals were scored by Thomas Verga, Noah Dzemovski, Piero Botero, and Keidan Kogan, who converted two penalties, including the winning shot. Goalkeeper Kirill Finkelshtein made nine saves during regulation and played a critical role in the shootout, saving two penalty attempts.

Totten Intermediate School’s outstanding performance this fall season not only highlights the athletic prowess of its students but also underscores the importance of teamwork, dedication, and school spirit. The Eagles’ commitment to excellence on both the field and in the classroom serves as an inspiring example for other schools in the region.
