The newly unveiled tiny house named Sofia is transforming the concept of compact living with its innovative design and efficient use of space. Measuring just 172 sq ft (16 sq m), this model is designed to accommodate one or two occupants, making it suitable for full-time off-grid living. Created by Vagabond Haven in Sweden, Sofia is based on a double-axle trailer and extends 20 ft (6 m) in length.
The exterior of Sofia is clad in spruce and timber, utilizing the traditional Japanese Shou Sugi Ban method of charring to enhance durability and weather resistance. Inside, the home features a choice of spruce or plywood siding accompanied by laminate flooring, creating a modern yet cozy atmosphere.
Smart Design Maximizes Space
Upon entering, residents find themselves in the central kitchen area, which is ingeniously designed to maximize functionality without sacrificing comfort. The compact kitchen is equipped with a microwave oven, a selection of either induction or gas cooktops, and a small refrigerator, along with ample cabinetry for storage. A wood-burning stove provides adequate heating, complemented by a mini-split air-conditioning system for warmer months.
The bedroom is multifunctional, serving as both a sleeping area and additional storage space. This room includes integrated furniture and a pull-out dining table with bench seating, allowing the space to double as a living and dining area, which is ideal for small gatherings.
On the opposite side of the home, the bathroom comprises a compact sink, a shower, and the option for either a flushing, composting, or incinerating toilet. Above the bathroom, a storage loft is accessible via a removable ladder, providing potential for additional sleeping space, although this may not comply with building regulations in many regions due to the absence of an egress window.

The base price for Sofia starts at €27,695 (approximately US$32,000) for an unfurnished model. The overall cost increases depending on selected options, which may include furniture, custom finishes, and a complete off-grid solar setup along with a rainwater harvesting system.
