The annual Mullet Contest at the Pennsylvania Farm Show has captured the attention of many, drawing hundreds of participants and spectators to Harrisburg on March 11, 2024. Contestants of all ages showcased their meticulously styled mullets, competing for the coveted championship title.

Strong enthusiasm filled the Main Hall of the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex as kids, teens, and adults turned out in vibrant outfits, enhancing their hairstyles for the event. Judge and sponsor Brittany Goldberg emphasized that a successful mullet combines several elements including length, style, flair, and presentation. “People come in their outfits. They spice up the mullets for this event, so they really show up. They put out their best hair,” she noted.

In a remarkable display of creativity, Drew Fleschut, a 10-year-old from Dallas, Pennsylvania, emerged as the overall winner. Dressed in a red-and-black plaid shirt and sporting a hairstyle reminiscent of the movie character Joe Dirt, Drew expressed disbelief at his victory. “It was crazy. I didn’t think I was going to win the competition. I’ve been growing my hair out for two-and-a-half years, and I didn’t really want to do a mullet, but now I do,” he said.

Celebrating Creativity and Community

Another highlight of the contest was Kiernan, who participated alongside his father, Pat. This father-son duo has made it a tradition to compete in the contest, marking their third consecutive year. “It was a great time. He got first place this year and has been growing this mullet for four years now. He absolutely loves it. Anytime we go to the barber, he always says ‘don’t cut it off.’ We also added the American flag for the 250th anniversary,” Pat shared pridefully.

The Pennsylvania Farm Show continues to cultivate a sense of community and fun through events like the Mullet Contest. Participants not only compete for glory but also embrace the opportunity to express their individuality in a lively atmosphere. The event not only celebrates the unique hairstyle but also the spirit of creativity and togetherness that defines the Pennsylvania Farm Show.

As the contest wrapped up, it was clear that the Mullet Contest is more than just a competition; it is a celebration of personal expression and a beloved tradition within the community.
