URGENT UPDATE: Thomas Nolan has officially been sworn in as the new Deputy Chief of the Montgomery County Detective Bureau, marking a significant leadership transition in local law enforcement. The ceremony took place on September 18, 2025, in a packed courtroom filled with law enforcement officials from across the county, including Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin R. Steele and Judge Risa Vetri Ferman.
In his new role, Deputy Chief Nolan will oversee a dedicated team of 62 sworn and unsworn members within the Detective Bureau, working under Chief Detective Mark Bernstiel. This appointment comes as law enforcement seeks to enhance operational effectiveness and community safety in the region.
Nolan, who joined the Montgomery County Detective Bureau on August 12, 2024, brings nearly four decades of experience from his previous role as the Director of Public Safety and Chief of Police for Upper Merion Township. His tenure at Upper Merion lasted 39 years, culminating in his appointment as Chief in June 2012 and later as Director of Public Safety in January 2018.
Since his arrival at the Detective Bureau, Nolan has made notable strides, including the establishment of the new Threat Assessment Management Unit (TAMU). This critical unit, which Nolan launched, focuses on investigating threats against public officials, educational institutions, places of worship, and other vulnerable targets in the community. Nolan assembled a seven-member team, creating the framework and procedures necessary for the unit’s operation.
“Tom Nolan is a highly respected law enforcement professional who brings extensive expertise to the Deputy Chief position,” said DA Steele during the swearing-in ceremony. “Chief Bernstiel and I are thrilled to elevate Tom to this leadership role within the Montgomery County Detective Bureau.”
This leadership change is expected to have a profound impact on local policing strategies, particularly in areas concerning public safety and community relations. As threats to public safety evolve, the establishment of the TAMU under Nolan’s leadership demonstrates a proactive approach to addressing these challenges.
Residents of Montgomery County can anticipate enhanced safety measures and a more robust response to potential threats, as Deputy Chief Nolan aligns his extensive knowledge of the region with the ongoing efforts of the Detective Bureau.
As this story develops, further updates will be provided on how Nolan’s leadership will shape the future of law enforcement in Montgomery County.
