URGENT UPDATE: Therapy dogs are making a significant impact at St. Agnes Medical Center in Fresno, California, as they provide essential emotional support to patients and staff. Franco the Great Dane, dressed in a superhero Batman cape, is one of the stars of the Heavenly Hounds Program that has been enhancing hospital morale since its inception in 2007.

In a heartwarming scene, volunteers like Gina Paul bring Franco and his fellow therapy dogs to the hospital to spread joy. “We love walking down the halls and making people happy,” Paul shared. The presence of these furry companions can transform a challenging day into a brighter one.

According to Brandon Miller, the Volunteer Services Manager overseeing the program, “If they’re having a rough day, sometimes just one of the Heavenly Hounds coming by can change their day and make it positive.” This emotional support is especially vital for patients facing medical procedures. “It takes their mind off ‘I’m about to have surgery or a procedure,'” Paul noted.

The Heavenly Hounds Program comprises 12 therapy dogs that engage with everyone from patients to hospital staff. The program has seen a decrease in available dogs due to the pandemic but is actively seeking to grow its ranks. “If you think your dog can work in public, please get them out,” Paul encouraged, highlighting the need for socialization and testing for potential therapy dogs.

The impact of therapy dogs like Franco extends beyond just the patients. They provide comfort to hospital workers, especially in high-stress areas such as the Emergency Room, where requests for their presence are frequent.

As the program seeks to expand, the community is encouraged to consider how their pets can contribute to this vital initiative. The emotional connection and joy these dogs bring cannot be overstated, making a tangible difference in the lives of those in the hospital.
