Austin’s nonprofit organization, The Sobering Center, has officially expanded its operations, adding 14 new beds to assist individuals seeking a safe environment to recover from intoxication. This development, announced on Monday, doubles the facility’s capacity and marks a significant advancement in its mission to offer supportive care.
Expansion Details and Impact
The newly opened second floor features updated areas designed to enhance the experience for clients, as well as additional space for staff members to facilitate patient discharges and care. Laura Elmore LeBlanc, CEO of The Sobering Center, emphasized the importance of this expansion. “The completion of the second floor represents a step forward in our mission to provide safe, supportive care for those using substances,” she stated.
To celebrate this milestone, The Sobering Center will host an event at 5:30 p.m. on December 2, 2023, at Electric Gravy Mumbai Bar & Canteen in East Austin. This gathering aims to raise awareness about the center and its initiatives, inviting community members to learn more about the services offered.
Understanding The Sobering Center
Opened in 2018, The Sobering Center offers an alternative to hospital or jail for individuals who are intoxicated. While not a treatment facility, it provides a critical service by offering care and support for those who may be seeking further assistance. To access the center, individuals must be at least 18 years old. Referrals come from first responders or partners of the nonprofit, as walk-in clients are not permitted.
The center is available 24 hours a day at 1213 Sabine St. in Central Austin, conveniently located near Waterloo Park. This accessibility ensures that those in need can find a safe space at any time, making a significant difference in the lives of many individuals in the community.
