A teenager’s life was saved after a dramatic 260-foot fall while hiking in Biggenden, Australia. Eighteen-year-old Jake McCollum plunged from a height of 80 meters on October 8, 2023, during a trek on Mount Walsh. Miraculously, high-tech gadgets played a crucial role in his rescue.
McCollum fell in a remote area, leading him to believe he may not survive the incident. “The wind was knocked out of me, and I remember thinking it was probably all over for me,” he recounted. He sustained multiple serious injuries, including a fractured spine, broken ribs, internal bleeding, and a head injury.
Fortunately, McCollum was equipped with two essential devices that contributed to his survival. The first was a personal locator beacon, which his parents had wisely insisted he carry. This device sent an alert to authorities, initiating a search for McCollum.
While the locator beacon was vital, his Apple AirPods also proved instrumental. After the alert was sent, McCollum’s parents received a call from him. His mother recalled the chilling moment: “I heard really, really faintly: ‘Mum, I’m hurt really bad.’” She stayed on the phone throughout the 90-minute drive to the vicinity where their son had fallen.
A massive search operation commenced, involving a helicopter team that scoured the area for five hours. Finally, they located the injured teenager. A flight paramedic expressed disbelief at McCollum’s survival, saying, “We were surprised he was alive, given the story we’d been told. So, we were very relieved to find him awake, conscious, and talking.”
