The Global Chess League (GCL), a collaborative effort between Tech Mahindra and FIDE, has announced a partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to enhance the viewing experience for chess enthusiasts. This initiative, set to roll out during Season 3 in Mumbai from December 13 to 24, 2025, aims to transform how chess is broadcast and experienced globally.
Through AWS’s advanced cloud capabilities, GCL will offer an enhanced broadcasting experience that includes real-time game updates, live commentary enriched with in-depth insights, and expanded worldwide coverage. Fans will benefit from multilingual broadcasts, AI-driven analysis, and interactive fan zones, all designed to create a more engaging and personalized viewing experience.
Innovative Broadcasting Solutions
The integration of AWS technology will enable GCL to deliver a more connected experience for its audience. Viewers will receive richer contextual information about each move, providing multiple ways to follow the action while engaging deeply with the sport. The league will utilize a variety of AWS services, such as AWS Elemental MediaLive, Amazon SageMaker, and Amazon CloudFront, to streamline its broadcast workflows. These technologies will facilitate reliable video transport, live encoding, and real-time data stream processing, allowing GCL to transition from traditional broadcasting methods to scalable, cloud-based solutions.
Peeyush Dubey, Chairperson of the Tech Mahindra Global Chess League, emphasized the importance of this collaboration, stating, “Every move in chess is about foresight, precision, and timing, and those same principles guide how we run this league. Collaborating with AWS allows us to build a smart broadcasting backbone that mirrors the intelligence of the game itself.”
Enhancing the Chess Experience
As the first official franchise chess league featuring both male and female players, GCL seeks to make chess more inclusive and accessible. The upcoming season will introduce innovative broadcast formats, multilingual storytelling, and new fan engagement programs, including GCL Creators, GCL SuperFans, and the GCL Contenders program on Chess.com.
Praveen Sridhar, Head of Partner Business at AWS India and South Asia, remarked on the significance of this partnership, saying, “The Global Chess League represents a fusion of tradition and innovation. Through our collaboration, we’re enabling a smarter, more connected broadcast experience that brings fans closer to the game than ever before.”
Season 3 will showcase top global players in a mixed-team format, featuring men, women, and young talents. The league will adopt a double round-robin system, with six franchise teams competing in a best-of-six board system in the popular rapid format, effectively blending individual skill with strategic teamwork.
