Syria has successfully thwarted a significant terrorist plot orchestrated by the Daesh group, aimed at disrupting New Year celebrations. The country’s Interior Ministry disclosed that heightened security measures in Aleppo and other regions prevented potential attacks on churches and public gatherings.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Interior Ministry revealed that intelligence indicated Daesh was planning suicide attacks during the New Year festivities, particularly focusing on the northern city of Aleppo. The Ministry emphasized that this information was acquired through ongoing counterterrorism efforts, which include close monitoring of Daesh cells and collaboration with international partners involved in counterterrorism operations.

To address the potential threat, authorities implemented rigorous security protocols. These included bolstering protection around churches, deploying both fixed and mobile patrols, and establishing checkpoints throughout Aleppo.

On the evening of December 27, officers stationed at a checkpoint in the Bab al-Faraj area became suspicious of a man later identified as a Daesh member. According to the Interior Ministry, when officers attempted to verify his identity, the suspect opened fire, resulting in the tragic death of a police officer. The assailant subsequently detonated an explosive device, injuring two additional officers in the process.

The Interior Ministry underscored that the decisive actions taken by law enforcement were critical in foiling this serious plot intended to target civilians during the holiday season.

Syria’s commitment to international counterterrorism efforts has been reinforced since the country formally joined the United States-led coalition against Daesh on November 12, 2024. The coalition, established in 2014, has conducted extensive military operations against the terror group across Syria and Iraq, but Syria’s involvement marks a new chapter in their collaborative efforts.

With the new Syrian administration focusing on enhancing security measures nationwide, especially in the wake of the fall of the Assad regime, officials are intent on safeguarding the public from such threats. The successful prevention of this plot reflects an ongoing commitment to ensure the safety of civilians during significant events like New Year celebrations.

As the situation evolves, the vigilance of Syrian authorities remains paramount in countering potential threats from extremist groups in the region.
