UPDATE: The Sundance Film Festival is gearing up for an emotional farewell in Park City, Utah, as officials unveil the first wave of programming for the 2026 festival, running from January 22 to February 1, 2026. This will mark the last festival at its long-time home before the event relocates to Boulder, Colorado, in 2027.
In a poignant tribute to its late founder, Robert Redford, who passed away last month at the age of 89, the festival will be dedicated to honoring his legacy and vision. Festival director Eugene Hernandez emphasized that the entire event will serve as a “meaningful tribute” to Redford, celebrating his impact on countless filmmakers and the broader community.
The festival’s programming includes the new Park City Legacy program, featuring archival screenings of festival favorites and engaging discussions with prominent alumni. Highlights include a tribute event titled “Celebrating Sundance Institute: A Tribute to Founder Robert Redford,” taking place at the festival’s start, along with a special screening of Michael Ritchie’s “Downhill Racer,” which showcases Redford’s groundbreaking work.
Between January 27 and 30, the Park City Legacy program will deliver a nostalgia-filled experience, showcasing restored classics like “Little Miss Sunshine” and “Half Nelson”, along with special appearances from directors and cast members. This retrospective promises to be a significant draw for attendees eager to celebrate the festival’s history.
“We have been so moved by the coverage and love for Mr. Redford,” said Hernandez. “This festival will be emotional, significant, and fun as we honor his legacy.”
Additionally, a culmination event is scheduled for January 30, designed to celebrate over 40 years of Sundance history and express gratitude to the local community. Specific details about this event will be released later.
As excitement builds, ticket packages for in-person and online screenings will go on sale starting October 22 at 9 a.m. PT, while single tickets will be available from January 14, 2026.
Next year’s programming reflects Redford’s values through community-focused events, artist talks, and legacy screenings, aiming to unite filmmakers, industry professionals, and audiences. Senior programmer John Nein noted that the festival’s offerings are designed to celebrate the spirit of community, a core tenet of Redford’s vision.
With a wealth of screenings and tributes planned, the 2026 Sundance Film Festival promises to be a landmark event, honoring the past while looking forward to the future. Be ready to witness a celebration of film, community, and the enduring legacy of Robert Redford.
