UPDATE: Stockton University President Joe Bertolino has just secured a substantial salary increase of $50,000, boosting his annual pay to $450,000. This move comes after the university’s board of trustees approved a new contract that not only raises his base salary but also opens the door for significant performance bonuses starting in 2027.

The new contract, effective July 1, 2026, includes an annual incentive bonus ranging from $50,000 to $100,000, contingent upon Bertolino’s performance. “I’m honored and deeply grateful to the board of trustees for their continued trust and support,” Bertolino stated in a release from the university, emphasizing his commitment to leading with integrity.

Bertolino, who stepped into the presidency earlier this year after leading Southern Connecticut State University, has already made waves at Stockton. He initiated a task force to explore future developments for the Atlantic City campus, which has seen substantial investment, including a $70 million expansion of housing facilities.

In addition to his salary, the contract provides for $5,500 in monthly housing expenses and a $70,000 annual contribution to a deferred payment plan for every year he remains in office. These financial incentives underscore the university’s commitment to retaining quality leadership.

Board Chair Jose Lozano praised Bertolino, stating, “He has proven himself to be a steady, compassionate and visionary leader for Stockton University.” Lozano highlighted Bertolino’s dedication to student success and community engagement, aligning with the university’s core values.

As public university salaries vary widely in New Jersey, it’s notable that Rutgers University recently appointed President William Tate IV with a record base pay of $1.1 million. This context raises questions about the compensation landscape for university leaders in the state.

The Stockton University community is watching closely as Bertolino’s new contract unfolds. His leadership style and strategic initiatives will likely impact the university’s direction and student engagement in the coming years.
