Staten Island high school basketball teams delivered strong performances this past weekend, with notable victories in both the PSAL and CHSAA leagues. Among the highlights were impressive wins from Susan Wagner, MSIT, and Eagle Staten Island, showcasing the talent and determination of local athletes.

Susan Wagner Dominates Brooklyn Collegiate

In a decisive match on March 16, 2024, Susan Wagner secured a commanding 78-53 victory over Brooklyn Collegiate in PSAL 4A competition. Point guard Chris Albano led the Falcons with 21 points, while teammates Clevi Hoxha and Charles Gambino added 18 and 13 points, respectively. The Falcons, having not played for a week, improved their overall record to 15-6 and 8-4 in league play.

Head coach Danny Lanigan praised his team’s performance, particularly highlighting their ball movement. “We are sharing the ball as best as we have all season, and it’s been putting our shooters in great positions to make shots,” Lanigan noted. After trailing 18-16 at the end of the first quarter, Wagner surged ahead, limiting Brooklyn to just seven points in the second quarter. The Falcons went into halftime with a 35-25 lead and maintained their momentum throughout the second half.

MSIT and Eagle Staten Island Achieve Victories

In another significant match on the same day, the MSIT Seagulls triumphed over Norman Thomas with a score of 74-60. Senior Ray Guerriero delivered a standout performance, scoring a career-high 27 points and helping the team break a two-game losing streak. The Seagulls now hold a record of 13-8 overall, with an 8-4 mark in the PSAL.

Meanwhile, Eagle Staten Island also celebrated a strong win against Washington Irving, defeating the Bulldogs 78-41. Armani Perez led all scorers with 25 points, while teammate Juneek Daniels contributed a double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds. This victory improved Eagle’s overall record to 7-13 and 4-8 in league play.

In additional action, Mount St. Michael defeated St. Peter’s 63-51, with senior Nico Parlanti leading St. Peter’s with 12 points. Despite a strong start, the Eagles were unable to recover from an early deficit.
