The St. Vrain Valley School District is preparing for its upcoming board elections, with candidate Peggy Kelly seeking to bring her extensive experience to the role. At 76 years old, Kelly has dedicated 25 years to the district and is focused on addressing key issues affecting families and students.
Kelly holds a Bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Colorado and has a rich professional background. She has worked as a hospital staff nurse, served as a nurse for the Boulder Valley School District, and worked as a field nurse for the Visiting Nurse Association. Additionally, she has taught middle school science for 13 years in a Christian school and has engaged with the community by teaching Constitution classes for five years.
In light of recent changes under the Trump administration, Kelly has been asked about her stance on supporting marginalized student groups. In response to concerns regarding targeted support for students of color, as well as protections for transgender and immigrant students, she emphasized the importance of verifying information. “I will have to fact-check what the current administration has actually said in regard to this question and confirm the source of this statement,” she stated.
Another pressing issue facing the St. Vrain Valley School District is the challenge of fluctuating enrollment numbers. With some areas experiencing declining enrollment while others witness rapid growth, the district must address the disparity in school capacity. Superintendent Kapushion has discussed this issue, noting that the district has a plan to manage these shifting demographics. Kelly expressed her intention to wait for further details on these plans as they become available.
When asked about the most significant issue affecting the district, Kelly highlighted the need to prioritize the concerns of families and children. “Most importantly, the ‘what’ facing the district is the question of what issues are facing families and kids, which in turn impact the district,” she explained.
As the election approaches, Kelly’s experience and commitment to the St. Vrain Valley community position her as a candidate eager to tackle the challenges ahead. Her background in healthcare and education, coupled with her engagement in community issues, reflects a holistic approach to addressing the needs of the district’s students and families.
