BREAKING: South Sudan’s First Vice President Riek Machar has been charged with treason, murder, and crimes against humanity in a shocking development that escalates political tensions in the nation. The announcement was made by Justice Minister Joseph Geng just hours before President Salva Kiir suspended Machar from his position on October 5, 2023, according to state radio.
The charges stem from Machar’s alleged involvement in attacks by the White Army militia against federal forces in March. This incident has reignited the rivalry between the two main political factions in South Sudan, a conflict that previously erupted into a devastating civil war from 2013 to 2018, resulting in approximately 400,000 deaths.
In addition to Machar, Kiir also suspended Petroleum Minister Puot Kang Chol, who faces similar charges. Machar has been under house arrest since March due to these allegations, with international powers expressing urgent concerns over his detention. They warn that his continued imprisonment could plunge South Sudan back into civil conflict.
“The evidence further reveals that the White Army operated under the command and influence of certain leaders of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army-in Opposition (SPLM/A-iO), including Dr. Riek Machar Teny,” stated Justice Minister Geng. He emphasized that the situation remains sensitive as it is now sub judice, calling for careful handling by both the public and media.
Machar and Kiir initially formed a unity government as part of a peace agreement aimed at ending the civil war, but their partnership has been fraught with tensions and sporadic violence continues between their factions. Alongside Machar, a total of 20 individuals have been indicted, with thirteen currently at large, according to Geng.
Activists are voicing their concerns regarding the legal proceedings. Edmund Yakani, executive director of the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization, expressed hope that the court will be fair, stating, “We need a competent court of law, not a kangaroo court of law.”
As these events unfold, observers are closely monitoring the situation, aware that the repercussions could be significant for South Sudan’s already fragile stability. The international community is expected to respond quickly to these alarming developments, as the potential for renewed conflict looms large over the nation.
