In a unique twist on fitness, a new mobile dog gym has been introduced in South Milwaukee, Wisconsin, offering a dedicated space for dogs to exercise on treadmills. The venture, named Alt Dog Run, is owned by Andrea Tripp, who transformed her passion for pet fitness into a business model designed to cater to busy dog owners.

Tripp recognized the challenges posed by Wisconsin’s harsh winters, which often make outdoor walks difficult. “Our winters can be brutal, and it’s hard to take your dog out for even five minutes,” Tripp noted. With this in mind, she equipped a large truck with two treadmills specifically designed for dogs. The system allows dogs of all sizes to run at their own pace, keeping them active even when the weather is less than ideal.

The concept originated in Tripp’s basement, where she initially provided treadmill sessions for her own dogs. After realizing the positive impact it had on their activity levels, she decided to formalize her efforts into a business at the beginning of the year. Today, Alt Dog Run not only offers treadmill sessions but also provides additional services such as photography, dog lures, and agility lessons. These can be arranged as private house calls or at larger community events, often in partnership with organizations like Ma, Paws, and Me Pet Rescue.

The mobile gym caters to a variety of dogs, including those who may be hesitant at first. “Not all dogs will immediately start running on the treadmills,” Tripp explained. “For some, it’s a little wonky at first, but just like ice skating, they eventually find their rhythm.”

“We had no idea Randy—a puppy mill survivor—would actually do the treadmill, and he killed it,”

said Jen Blossom, co-founder of Ma, Paws, and Me. All dogs adopted from the rescue receive a complimentary treadmill session as part of their transition into a new home.

As one of the few mobile dog gyms in the state, Alt Dog Run serves as a supplementary activity for dog owners. Tripp emphasized that it provides an alternative to the standard block walk, offering a new routine and experience for pets. Session durations range from 5 to 20 minutes, with prices varying between $10 and $30, making it accessible for a wide range of pet owners.
