URGENT UPDATE: A heartfelt tribute is underway as Southern California artist Steven Brousseau honors local WWII veteran John T. “Jack” Moran with a special portrait to celebrate his upcoming 100th birthday next week. This touching gesture comes as the number of surviving World War II veterans declines, making each celebration all the more significant.
Just last week in Westlake Village, California, Brousseau presented Moran with a unique artwork that reflects the veteran’s incredible journey. The portrait features one side illustrating a young soldier and the other depicting the seasoned veteran Moran has become. Brousseau expressed the importance of these stories, stating, “In a way, it’s like a window into the past.”
Moran, a U.S. Army veteran who bravely served during World War II, shared his experiences during combat, recalling, “Day after day, the shells just barely missed me.” He served in a platoon of 33 men, with only two, including himself, returning home. His bravery earned him a Purple Heart and Bronze Star.
With his 100th birthday just days away, Moran reflected on his combat days, stating, “We were cold all the time. We were hungry all the time. We were scared all the time.” Brousseau, who first met Moran in 2018, has maintained a connection with the veteran, emphasizing the importance of preserving these narratives for future generations.
The emotional moment culminated when Moran asked, “Did you draw this?” to which Brousseau proudly affirmed, “I did.” Moran acknowledged the significance of the artwork, remarking, “Very fortunate that this kid lived long enough to be this person here,” as he pointed to both sides of the portrait.
This poignant gift not only celebrates Moran’s milestone birthday but also serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those in the military. Moran expressed his gratitude with a heartfelt, “Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I appreciate this very much,” showcasing the impact of Brousseau’s tribute.
As Moran prepares to celebrate this remarkable birthday, stories like his remind us of the courage and resilience of the Greatest Generation. The community is invited to share in honoring Moran’s legacy and the sacrifices of all veterans, ensuring their stories are never forgotten.
