A 46-year-old man lost his life following an avalanche he triggered while ski touring in the Allgäu Alps, southern Germany, on March 4, 2024. The incident occurred on the northern flank of the Iseler Mountain during the afternoon. After setting off the avalanche, the man contacted emergency services for assistance.
Rescue efforts faced significant challenges due to poor weather conditions and low visibility, which initially prevented a helicopter from reaching the site. Instead, a mountain rescue team ascended to the accident area on foot. According to the police, unstable snow conditions greatly hampered their access and delayed their response.
The individual was ultimately located in a steep snowfield below the mountain’s north face. He was airlifted to a nearby hospital while undergoing resuscitation efforts but was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. Authorities confirmed that the avalanche occurred outside of the secured ski area, which was not deemed to be at risk.
