BREAKING: Famed skateboarder Terry Kennedy is set to be released from prison on December 31, 2025, just in time for New Year’s Eve celebrations. The Illinois Department of Corrections confirmed to TMZ Sports that Kennedy, 40, has been granted sentence credit, allowing for an earlier release from his 5-year sentence related to the tragic death of fellow skater Josiah Kassahun.
Kennedy’s release marks a significant moment for the skateboarding community, as he will be on supervised release until June 30, 2026, before being fully discharged. This news comes as the skating world awaits his return after a tumultuous legal journey.
In July 2021, an incident at the Comfort Suites Motel in Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois, led to the death of Kassahun, who was just 23 years old. Reports indicate that an argument broke out between Kennedy and his ex-girlfriend while they were leaving the motel with Kassahun. In a fit of rage, Kennedy reportedly punched Kassahun, causing him to fall and sustain fatal injuries.
Initially charged with first-degree murder, Kennedy was acquitted of that charge in 2022. However, he was convicted of two counts of aggravated battery, resulting in two consecutive 5-year sentences, with eligibility for release after serving 50 percent of his time.
Kennedy, known as a legend in the street skating scene, has participated in numerous events, including the X Games and the Maloof Money Cup. His influence extends beyond skating, as he has appeared in various TV shows, films, and video games.
As fans prepare for Kennedy’s return, many are left to reflect on the complexities of redemption and the impact of violence within the sports community. The skateboarder will step back into the spotlight in just 29 days, igniting conversation and curiosity about his future endeavors.
