The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) is urging riders to update their Key cards as nearly 45,000 cards are set to expire on October 3, 2023. Specifically, 44,617 Key cards will no longer be valid, prompting the authority to remind users about the importance of registration and the options available for transferring funds.

Riders who have registered their Key cards can conveniently transfer their Travel Wallet funds and passes to a new card online. This service is designed to enhance user experience and ensure that riders do not lose any balance or unused passes when their cards expire. According to SEPTA, “Registering your card not only protects it if it’s misplaced but also makes it much easier to transfer any Travel Wallet funds or unused passes.”

For those needing to replace their expired cards, a $4.95 replacement fee applies. This fee is refundable if the new card is registered within 30 days of purchase. Riders can initiate transfers either at SEPTA Sales Locations, through the Customer Call Center, or by using the card-to-card replacement service.

Unregistered cards that have expired require riders to contact the Key Customer Call Center for assistance. SEPTA emphasizes the importance of registration to prevent the loss of funds and streamline the transfer process.

In addition to addressing card expirations, SEPTA is enhancing its payment options. Riders can now use a contactless credit card, debit card, smartphone, or smartwatch to pay for their Bus, Metro, and Regional Rail fares. This new payment method aligns with the existing Travel Wallet rates, allowing for seamless transactions. Furthermore, Bus and Metro riders benefit from two free transfers, making public transport more accessible and convenient.

As SEPTA continues to innovate and improve its services, it remains dedicated to providing a reliable and user-friendly experience for all riders.
