Savannah city officials are actively engaging residents in discussions about the proposed Fiscal Year 2026 Budget, inviting public feedback on how tax dollars should be allocated. On August 28, 2023, the city’s budget team hosted an open forum where community members expressed their concerns and priorities regarding the budget, which exceeds $603 million.
Interim Chief Operating Officer of Management and Budget, Melissa Carter, emphasized the importance of community input in shaping the budget. “We really do need to hear the things that we need to consider and develop in the budget,” Carter stated. The forum allowed residents to voice their opinions on various issues, including stormwater management, public safety, and the rising cost of living.
As Savannah continues to grow, the city recognizes the diverse needs of its residents. Carter noted, “We’re a very diverse community and everyone is impacted in a certain specific way.” The feedback gathered during this session will be instrumental in guiding the budgetary decisions that affect those who live and work in Savannah.
Public Engagement and Feedback Mechanism
City officials explained that the feedback from both in-person discussions and ongoing surveys will play a crucial role in shaping the budget proposal. After the preliminary budget is released, residents will have another opportunity to express their concerns during the city council’s budget retreat.
Interim Senior Director of the Office of Management and Budget, Sancia Joesph-Jarvis, detailed how the city’s approach mirrors that of the previous year’s budget planning. “We will have a section dedicated to the information that we got in the survey, the information that we got from our budget simulations, and how our budget formulates around that information that we receive as citizens,” Joseph-Jarvis explained.
The online survey, which is available until August 31, 2023, provides an additional platform for residents to share their thoughts. Paper copies of the survey can also be found at local community centers and city libraries, ensuring accessibility for all residents.
As Savannah prepares for the upcoming fiscal year, the city remains focused on transparency and inclusivity in its budgeting process. By actively seeking input from the community, officials aim to create a budget that reflects the priorities and concerns of its diverse population.
