URGENT UPDATE: The Salvation Army is in desperate need of toy donations to ensure 400 local families can celebrate Christmas this year in San Diego. With just one week remaining before the distribution begins, the organization is currently short by over 300 toys.
Inside the Salvation Army Kroc Center warehouse, toys such as basketballs, dolls, and art supplies are piled high. However, the collection is far from sufficient to meet the demand. Glynis Eckert, director of marketing for the Salvation Army Kroc Center, emphasized the urgency: “Even like a Barbie house, this is something that we’ll put aside specifically for a family that maybe we know had a bit extra difficult time this year and has a child that age that would really love.”
Officials report a significant shortage, particularly for older children. Janet Reade, director of volunteers and community engagement, stated, “The age groups that we get the most donations for tend to be younger children, but our pre-selected families can register their children of all ages: 0 all the way up to 12, so we are looking for toys for those older age groups.”
Time is running out. Next week, parents from a pre-registered list will choose and collect toys for their children, with the organization hoping to provide each child with three to four toys. “We, of course, are hoping to have every parent be able to get three or four toys for their children,” Eckert added.
If the toy shortage continues, the Salvation Army may have to purchase toys out of pocket, which would create a significant financial strain and impact its broader mission of spreading holiday joy. The organization aims to provide families with a complete Christmas experience, including a sack full of toys, gift wrap, bows, and a food box so families can enjoy the holiday spirit fully.
Donations can be made in person at the Kroc Center, online, or through monetary contributions. Every act of generosity counts, and the Salvation Army is counting on the community to step up and help make this holiday special for those in need.
