URGENT UPDATE: Salt Lake County has just launched a groundbreaking initiative called ‘Green Vision’ aimed at enhancing sustainability efforts across various departments. This announcement came during an inaugural recognition ceremony held on Tuesday, where Mayor Jenny Wilson awarded ten departments for their commitment to energy conservation and environmental stewardship.
This initiative signals a significant step forward in the county’s ongoing efforts to combat pressing environmental issues, including the shrinking Great Salt Lake. Mayor Wilson emphasized the importance of these efforts, stating, “We want our county employees to understand Green Vision, and that just means we at Salt Lake County have a value of saving money for our taxpayers and also doing what’s right for the environment.”
The launch of ‘Green Vision’ is particularly timely, as the county faces severe water shortages in an increasingly arid state. Through this initiative, Salt Lake County aims to streamline and unify sustainability projects, emphasizing a collaborative approach among various agencies.
During the ceremony, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office, along with five other agencies, received the Achievement in Land award for their participation in the successful ‘Flip the Strip’ program. This initiative transformed 160,930 square feet of water-intensive lawn into water-efficient landscaping, directly addressing the county’s drought resilience goals.
Wilson articulated the necessity of these changes, saying, “I am one of the people that gets a phone call when I say, ‘Hey, county, can we cut back on our water use?’ And then somebody’s driving along and sprinklers are running in the middle of the night.” She urged county employees to lead by example in water conservation efforts.
Other notable achievements recognized during the ceremony included the Achievement in Water awarded to Salt Lake County Arts and Culture for its contributions to preserving the Great Salt Lake.
