The City of Sacramento has reported notable advancements in its efforts to manage homelessness, as detailed in the latest weekly progress report from the City’s Incident Management Team (IMT). Covering the period from November 10 to 16, 2023, the report highlights a comprehensive response to homelessness, with substantial engagement and action taken regarding unsheltered individuals.
During this week, Sacramento’s 311 customer service received 544 calls, which led to the initiation of 2,096 cases. This figure surpasses the number of calls, as multiple cases can arise from a single call, as noted by the Sacramento City Express. In a positive development, the city closed 2,466 cases, indicating that many issues were resolved or compliance was achieved.
The Department of Community Response’s outreach staff played a vital role, enrolling 74 individuals into databases that connect them with local shelters and essential resources. Housing placements also saw some progress, with 17 individuals successfully located at either the City’s Roseville Road campus or the Outreach and Engagement Center (OEC) by the report’s publication on November 18, 2023.
Despite these encouraging developments, challenges remain regarding capacity. The Roseville Road campus reported no available Pallet homes or trailers, and only two spaces at the OEC were open, with an average of 13 openings at City-funded shelters. This shortage highlights the ongoing need for effective solutions to accommodate the city’s homeless population.
In addressing the visible impact of homelessness on the community, Sacramento’s IMT conducted waste removal efforts that resulted in the disposal of 50,140 pounds of trash. This initiative underscores the city’s commitment to maintaining public spaces while tackling homelessness.
Sacramento’s dedication to transparency is evident through a data dashboard launched for public access. This platform allows residents to monitor the weekly progress of the IMT since September 2023, along with cumulative statistics for outreach, compliance, and cleanup activities. The proactive approach reflects the city’s ongoing commitment to addressing homelessness systematically and transparently, aiming to improve the quality of life for all residents.
