On December 19, 2023, Rydell presented three free vehicles to clients of the Community Violence Intervention Center (CVIC) during the fourth annual Angels on Wheels event held in Grand Forks. The initiative aims to alleviate transportation barriers for individuals who have faced significant trauma, including domestic violence and human trafficking.
Desiree Freadrich, one of the recipients, described the experience as “amazing” and “overwhelming.” She expressed her gratitude, stating, “I’m really overwhelmed, but I’m very happy and proud that there are people like this in our community.” For Freadrich, owning a vehicle means greater independence, allowing her to attend appointments and manage her daily life without relying on others for transportation.
The Angels on Wheels program, according to a news release from Rydell, aims to empower clients by providing them with reliable transportation. Ben Cahalan, General Manager of Rydell, emphasized the program’s significance, saying, “These vehicles are more than a means of getting from place to place—they are tools for healing, stability, and new beginnings.”
Community Support and Additional Resources
Each vehicle was donated by a different Rydell location: Rydell GM, Rydell Honda Nissan, and Rydell Toyota. Sheila Morris, CVIC’s Vice President of Advocacy, highlighted the importance of matching clients with vehicles, stating, “Transportation has been a huge barrier for them, so today, matching them with a vehicle is going to be a really important step in their self-sufficiency.”
The recipients also received Rydell gift cards for future vehicle maintenance, along with $300 gas cards donated by Northdale Oil. Additionally, they were given gift baskets containing vouchers for local businesses, including Darcy’s Cafe and Happy Joe’s Pizza. Safe Kids Grand Forks contributed by providing car seats for children and offered on-site installation services.
Another recipient, Cydney Richards, shared her surprise and excitement at receiving a vehicle. “It feels really good,” she remarked. Richards, who previously depended on rideshare services to commute, expressed relief at having her own transportation, especially during the winter months. “I can’t wait to take it for a spin,” she said.
Impact on Lives and Future Goals
The partnership between Rydell and CVIC is critical for clients who often face numerous challenges. To qualify for a vehicle, CVIC clients must have a driver’s license and sufficient financial resources for car insurance. Morris pointed out that these vehicles will enable the women to reach their jobs, transport their children to school, and attend medical appointments, thus enhancing their overall self-sufficiency.
“Without transportation, things can become extremely difficult,” Morris noted. “This really makes a momentous impact on their lives.” The Angels on Wheels event not only provides practical support but also fosters a sense of community and hope for those who have experienced profound challenges.
